BANGOR, Maine — Bangor police say a pedestrian was killed Saturday night when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Hammond Street in Downtown Bangor.

That section of the street, outside Mexicali Blues, likely will be closed late into the night as police reconstruct the crash.

Police have yet to release the victim’s identity.

The owners of Bahaar Pakistani Restaurant said they witnessed the crash. The victim was a homeless man who regularly ate at the restaurant on weekend nights.

“Usually, when we close, we’d feed him,” said owner Farzana Khan. The man was crossing the street around 8:35 p.m. to get his food when he was struck by a light-colored Chevy Cruze that was traveling through downtown from Hammond Street hill.

“It was a loud bang, I mean, really loud,” Khan said.

A shopping cart was knocked over in the street at the scene of the crash, its contents strewn across the street. The owners of Bahaar Pakistani said the man carried his possessions in that cart.
