ORRINGTON — May 24 was a special day in the life of the East Orrington Congregational Church. On that day, Nancy Moore, after 45 years of service, led the church’s 20-member choir for the last time with multiple anthems including “God Bless America.”
Moore began her journey of faith with no experience in directing choirs, just a calling to lead.
She started out many years ago singing in the very choir she now directs, singing solos and helping choose the music for any given Sunday. The choir in the early days were few in number but with Moore’s guidance, determination and spirit, it has become the choir many enjoy hearing and singing in today.
Moore, when asked about why she became the choir director, said, “Because I love music. I loved going to every rehearsal, every concert, every service and looked forward to being with my extended family. It never got old for me.”
Moore has helped many of young singers hone their skills and find the courage to sing solos. She has led cantatas and group choirs from other churches. She sometimes selected music for summer programs and many special occasions.
Moore’s leadership, love and energy will be missed, church officials said. One choir member said, “There is a true admiration and appreciation for Nancy that I have witnessed from being a member. She liked to challenge us to sing the music of our Christian faith with the high standards and expectations that had for her choir.”
Friends, past choir members gathered to thank her after the church’s worship service on May 24.
