PORTLAND, Maine — Police are searching for a man who allegedly robbed, assaulted and attempted to sexually assault a woman in the city’s West End last week, Assistant Chief Vern Malloch said.
The attack on the 23-year-old woman occurred around 12:30 a.m. on May 31 on Clark Street, according to Malloch.
The victim was walking by herself when the man approached from behind and dragged her into an alley, Malloch said.
The man allegedly ordered the victim to take off her clothes as he was holding her, but he fled on foot with her purse, Malloch said. The victim subsequently called police.
The woman suffered facial, neck and arm injuries but did not require a hospital visit. The suspect is a Hispanic or light-skinned African-American man standing about 6 feet tall with a medium build and short black hair. He was wearing a baseball cap.
Anybody with information on the incident should call Portland police at 874-8533. Officers are also looking to speak with a man who found the victim’s purse near where the assault took place.
