PORTLAND, Maine — The top executive of Dunkin’ Donuts said the company plans to test a home delivery service later this year, joining the likes of Starbucks, McDonald’s and Chipotle in considering “mobile ordering.”

Dunkin’ CEO Nigel Travis told CNBC’s “On the Money” the company has mobile ordering in private development and plans to “move to a more public test later this year,” he said. “We’ll probably launch mobile ordering sometime next year.”

Travis said he thinks the company will increasingly focus on delivery, following a broader trend in the food service industry of providing more convenient ways to order and buy their products.

The service would allow customers to place orders through an app on a mobile phone or other other device. The Boston Globe reported the company has not started to test the system.

With about 8,000 locations across the country, Travis said the public rollout of delivery service would happen incrementally.

He did not say where the Canton, Massachusetts-based company would first launch that service, but the Boston area is indeed its home.
