BELFAST, Maine — Police say an 89-year-old woman who got into a collision with a tractor-trailer Monday while driving on Route 1 is lucky that she did not suffer serious injuries.
Dorothy Magoon of Brooks was traveling north in a 2011 Ford Escape at about 11:30 a.m. when she passed Aubuchon Hardware and its garden supply center, according to Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham of the Belfast Police Department.
“She was thinking about planting tomatoes, and the next thing she knows, she’s spinning in circles,” Cunningham said Tuesday.
Mitchell Brown, 36, of Freedom was heading south in a tractor-trailer truck when he saw Magoon veering into his lane, Cunningham said. Brown pulled to the right in an effort to avoid her but Magoon still hit the trailer. The Escape was totaled, and Magoon was taken to Waldo County General Hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Cunningham said, adding that she has since been released.
Brown was not injured in the crash but the tractor-trailer was damaged, though not totaled, police said.
