CALAIS, Maine — Firefighters from Calais and its mutual aid partners were called Wednesday evening to Main Street to extinguish a fire in a densely developed part of town.

The fire call came in shortly before 7:30 p.m. as a fire alarm activation, an emergency dispatcher with Washington County Regional Communications Center said.

While the blaze reported was brought under control within about an hour, fire crews remained as of 9 p.m. checking into reports of smoke in nearby buildings.
