Collins Center
ORONO — The Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine announced that it will offer two of the best London theater shows this summer.
“A View from the Bridge” and “The Audience” will be broadcast on the big screen at CCA as part of NTLIVE.
Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge” will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, June 26. Miller confronts the American dream in this dark, passionate tale set in Brooklyn, where longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of freedom. But when one of the cousins falls for Eddie’s niece, they discover freedom comes at a price. And Eddie’s jealous mistrust exposes a deep, unspeakable secret — one that drives him to commit the ultimate betrayal.
Helen Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II in the updated version of Peter Morgan’s “The Audience” at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9. For 60 years at Buckingham Palace, Elizabeth II has met weekly with the prime minister — including Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and David Cameron. Each prime minister has used the weekly private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional — sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. Through the meetings, viewers see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness moments that shaped a monarch.
Since 2009, NTLIVE has transmitted the best of British theater live from London to cinemas and venues around the world. The broadcasts are filmed in front of a live audience, with cameras positioned throughout the theater to ensure cinema audiences get the best-seat-in-the-house view. Productions are transmitted via satellite to the CCA, then projected onto a 40-foot high-definition screen.
Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students and available at collinscenterforthearts.com or by calling 581-1755, 800-622-TIXX.
