ORLAND, Maine — A local man suspected of being high on bath salts is facing multiple charges after he allegedly assaulted four people and falsely told them he had just murdered his mother.
Christopher Wells, 38, of Gross Point Road was arrested Monday, Maine State Police indicated Wednesday.
Troopers David Barnard and Bryan Creamer were called to a neighbor’s house around 10:30 a.m. Monday after Wells allegedly assaulted people there, state police said. No one was seriously injured, according to police.
“Christopher was believed to be under the influence of bath salts and he stated [to the neighbors] he just murdered his mother in his house,” Lt. Roderick Charette wrote in a prepared statement.
Police said they later found Wells’ mother unharmed.
The troopers, assisted by officers with Maine Marine Patrol, the Bucksport Police Department and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, entered Wells’ home to see if there might be anyone injured inside, Charette said. They found no one inside but did observe that “a lot of things” had been broken and that the entire house was generally in disarray.
“Located on or around the kitchen table there were 294 hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia,” Charette wrote. “There was also a usable amount of bath salts, cocaine and marijuana located [in the home].”
Wells was arrested on charges of assault, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, possession of a hypodermic apparatus, possession of a useable amount of marijuana and with the sale and use of drug paraphernalia, Charette said.
Wells was still being held at the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth early Wednesday afternoon, according to jail staff.
