CASCO, Maine — A 3-year-old Naples girl suffered serious head trauma in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Route 302.

Ashley McMullan, 26, of Naples was operating a 2012 Jeep Compass headed west on Route 302 when the vehicle left the road, struck a utility pole and rolled onto its side, according to a release from Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The impact of the collision caused high tension lines connected to the pole to ignite, starting a small fire that was extinguished by a passerby. Others who came upon the crash extricated McMullan, her 3-year-old daughter and her 7-year-old son from the vehicle.

McMullan and her son were taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The 3-year-old girl was treated at the scene by Casco emergency medical technicians and then taken by Lifeflight of Maine helicopter to Maine Medical Center with serious head trauma.

Both children were in car seats at the time of the crash, according to Goulet.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office crash reconstruction team.
