RANGELEY PLANTATION, Maine — Game wardens and local fire and rescue personnel assisted a 69-year-old Texas man who broke his ankle while hiking on the Appalachian Trail near Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
Charles Smith of Plano, Texas, was hiking a section of the trail near the intersection of the Bemis Track Trail, according to a release from Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.
Three game wardens and one forest ranger went to the scene just before noon Wednesday and, along with 20 fire and rescue personnel from Mexico, Rumford and Byron, and two members of the Mahoosic Mountain Rescue Team, spent nearly four hours removing Smith from the trail, which included steep terrain.
Smith was brought to Rumford Hospital, then later was transferred to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
