NEWPORT, Maine — A local man was arrested Thursday afternoon after an alleged assault on his girlfriend, according to the town’s police chief.
Nicholas Withee, 26, is facing charges of domestic violence aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Chief Leonard Macdaid.
The aggravated assault charge is a Class B felony, Macdaid said.
Macdaid said Withee allegedly backed the victim into a television set, grabbed her by the neck and choked her until she saw stars. He also allegedly threw the TV, which struck a baby in the room, knocking her down, Macdaid said. The baby was brought to an area hospital for a wound to the head.
Macdaid said Withee has been arrested for domestic violence on two other occasions, but the charge was lowered to disorderly conduct both times.
He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail after his arrest.
