AUGUSTA, Maine — More than a dozen teens were issued summonses and two adults were arrested when police broke up an underage drinking party early Saturday morning at a home on South Belfast Avenue, according to information posted on the Augusta Police Department’s Facebook page.
Officers Michael Unterkoefler, Desmond Nutter, Laura Drouin, Anthony Drouin, Robert Mathieu and Sgt. Scott Harris went to the residence at about 1:20 a.m. for a report of a “party that was getting out of control,” Deputy Chief Jared Mills said in the post.
Fifteen summonses were issued for underage drinking, he wrote. Michael Clark, 19, of Augusta and Walter Curtis, 20, of Winthrop were arrested and charged with being a minor while consuming alcohol. Others who were issued summonses were not named by police because they are juveniles.
Information about when they are due to appear in Augusta District Court was not released.
Officers were able to stop several of the individuals who were attempting to leave either on foot or by vehicle, the deputy chief said in the post. They were detained while officers coordinated with parents for their safe return home.
“The Augusta Police Department is bringing this incident to everyone’s attention as a reminder of the dangers of underage drinking and the consequences,” Mills wrote. “The summer has just begun, and this incident could have ended with some tragic outcome as many have in the past.”
He urged parents and teenagers to talk about the consequences of drinking and driving “to avoid tragedies involving underage drinking this summer and in the future.”
