ALTON-OLD TOWN — The Maine Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation has chosen Hirundo Wildlife Refuge as site to plant two Maine-native American chestnut trees. Planting will take place 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, in the refuge beyond Gate 1.

The goal of The American Chestnut Foundation is to restore the American chestnut tree to eastern woodlands to benefit the environment, wildlife, and society.

ATV Ride-In

AREA — SunEdison and the Penobscot Off Road Riders will co-host the annual ATV Ride-In, at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at the Rollins Wind Project. The Ride-In will bring together ATVers from across the area to experience one of Maine’s wind projects up-close while enjoying the scenic beauty of the area. Event participants will tour the wind project and enjoy a post-ride barbecue luncheon.

Riders will meet at the Penobscot Off Road Riders Club on Osgood Lane in Lincoln and ride to the SunEdison operations and maintenance building at 1600 Lee Road, Lincoln.

The ATV Ride-In will conclude with a barbecue luncheon and a raffle that will benefit Camp Capella in Holden, which provides recreational and educational opportunities for people with disabilities.

Silent auction, yard sale

BANGOR — The Maine Veteran’s Home, 44 Hogan Road, will hold a silent auction and yard sale 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, June 26.There are gift certificates. Jewelry, baskets and Waterfront concerts tickets will among the items up for bid.

Proceeds will benefit The Walk To End Alzheimer’s.

History tour sponsor

BANGOR — Bangor region residents and visitors are learning more about the city’s history thanks to Eaton Peabody, Attorneys at Law and the Bangor Historical Society. The law firm has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the 151 year-old organization’s popular summer walking tours.

“One of our primary goals is to share the history of Bangor and her people,” said Melissa Gerety, Bangor Historical Society executive director. “Our walking tours are one of the ways we do that — and we couldn’t continue to do it without the support of community partners like Eaton Peabody. We are grateful for their support.”

This year the historical society offers four different tours as part of its summer series. Tour titles include Mount Hope Cemetery, The Great Fire of 1911, Bangor’s Historic Architecture and the Devil’s Half Acre. Tours are offered 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday’s. Bangor Band concert

BANGOR — The Bangor Band will present another summer concert at 7 p.m.Tuesday, June 30, at the Bangor Waterfront. The Bangor Band is conducted by Curvin Farnham. The band will perform in the “Blue Clamphitheatre” concert shell.

Concert goers should bring chairs or blankets. The concert is sponsored by Penobscot Financial Advisors of Bangor.

Admission to the concert is free, although donations are accepted.

Architecture tour

BANGOR — Bangor’s landscape is filled with examples of the work of some of America’s greatest architects. Join the Bangor Historical Society for a trip through the Queen City’s neighborhoods and get a different perspective on her history 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 20 and Aug. 8; 6-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5.

Summer Wine at Hill House

BANGOR — Celebrate summer during the Bangor Historical Society’s “Summer Wine at Hill House” event 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25, July 23 and Aug, 27, on the grounds of the historic Thomas A. Hill House, 159 Union St.

The event is an opportunity to gather with friends and fellow members of the historical society while touring the historic home and enjoying fine wine, organizers said.

Conservation Field Day

BRADLEY — The Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District has partnered up with the Maine Forest and Logging Museum, Penobscot Indian Nation, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to host a Kids Conservation Field Day 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Leonard’s Mills.

Children ages 6 to 12 will learn about Maine forests, wildlife, soils, and aquatic life in ponds, lakes and streams. The youngsters will learn in indoor and outdoor settings while doing hands-on activities. They dig in a soils pit, pull aquatic insects and plants out of the river for identification, go on nature walks to identify trees with a forester, and much more.

Babysitter training

BUCKSPORT — The purpose of the American Red Cross babysitter’s training course is to provide youth who want to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. Designed for youth ages 11 to 15, the course helps participants develop leadership skills, build a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and guide children’s behavior. Participants also will  learn basic child care and basic first aid. The training will be conducted 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Jewett School Community Center.

The cost of the course is $60 which includes a participant’s manual, emergency reference guide, CD-ROM and certification upon completion of the course. There will be a 20-minute lunch break. Bring a lunch.

  • Blended learning, full course, $27 for online session and $15 for skills session.

The blended learning option is the full Adult and Pediatric First Aid-CPR-AED certification and combines an online component and a skills session. The online component is self-paced and can be completed at home. The skills session will be completed during the 1-3:30 p.m. CPR-AED course where participants will have an opportunity to practice CPR on mannequins.

Class size for the morning and afternoon is limited to 10 students each.

Authorized provider for the courses is the Bucksport Recreation Department.

Butterfly count

HOLDEN — Help count butterflies for the North American Butterfly Count 1-3 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Counts are held nationwide, and the Fields Pond Butterfly Count supplies important data about declines or increases of butterfly populations.

Those interested in counting and identifying butterflies on that date elsewhere within the count circle should call Pat Snyder for details at 567-3137 or email dorine38@aol.com. The circle is a 7.5-mile radius centered on Fields Pond. All ages invited to take part.

The cost to participate is $3, which benefits the North American Butterfly Count. There is no cost for children to participate.

Family Fun Day

Summer fun at the farm

ORRINGTON — The Curran Homestead Living History Farm and Museum, 372 Fields Pond Road, will hold its annual Summer Festival 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 18, to kick off Orrington’s Old Home Week.

The festival will offer five bluegrass bands, a chili cook-off contest, a barbecue, living history activities and family farm fun at Field’s Pond.

The museum’s Blowout in the Barnyard annual yard sale fundraiser will take place 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday through Sunday, July 23-25. To arrange to have items donated for the sale to be picked up or dropped off, call Dick Hanson at 217-1281 or Bruce Bowden at 356-5076.

STILLWATER — The Stillwater Federated Church will hold its Strawberry Festival noon-3 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at the church. Strawberry Shortcake, pie or sundae, plus a beverage will be available at a cost of $4, $1 children. Pies and aprons made by Jan Thibodeau also will be available for purchase. The church is handicapped accessible with ample parking.
