OLD TOWN, Maine — Nine people were displaced following a fire that swept through a multi-unit home on Main Street early Thursday morning.

Firefighters from Old Town, Orono, Bangor, Milford and Veazie responded to 627 Main St. shortly after 6 a.m., according to Old Town Fire Capt. David Daniel.

The rear of the building and a garage were completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Daniel said all occupants were out safely and accounted for when firefighters arrived.

Daniel said because of heat and smoke, firefighters had to battle the blaze from the exterior of the dwelling, and once the flames were under control, crews were able to move inside.

A vehicle parked in the driveway also was damaged, the captain said.

Daniel said the building was considered a total loss, and it wasn’t clear who the owner was. Old Town firefighters are working with the Old Town police department and state fire marshal’s office to determine a cause.

Daniel also said the residence had no working smoke detectors.

The American Red Cross is working to assist the displaced tenants to ensure they have clothing, food and shelter.

Main Street, also known as Route 2, was expected to be closed near the scene for much of Thursday morning while firefighters continued to investigate.

No injuries were reported.
