DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — An Abbot man accused of shooting his father to death in Parkman on May 12 was indicted Thursday by the Piscataquis County grand jury.

Zachery Grant, 38, is facing a murder charge in the death of David Grant, 61, at the father’s rural home in Parkman. The state medical examiner’s office determined that Grant died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Zachery Grant was found injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face when police arrived at the father’s house. Grant initially was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and later treated at Acadia Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Bangor, where he was arrested on May 27.

When Grant made his first court appearance on May 28, he was wearing a white plastic medical helmet and it appeared that his left eye was completely closed. He also had bandages around his neck as he stood in Piscataquis County Superior Court.

Grant has minor criminal convictions on his record, all from the early 2000s, including criminal mischief, writing a bad check, and operating a vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, according to the state Bureau of Identification.

District Court Judge Bruce Jordan, who signed Grant’s arrest warrant in May, also signed a request by the attorney general’s office to impound the probable cause affidavit until his arraignment.

Grant is scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. July 6.
