CARIBOU, Maine — Mechanical failure is believed to have caused a local man to drive his vehicle through an intersection and crash into a guardrail Thursday evening.

Kyle Perkins, 27, of Caribou was driving his 2006 Honda Pilot south on Main Street when he tried to turn onto Park Street at about 8 p.m. and apparently experienced mechanical failure, according to a statement issued by Caribou police Friday afternoon.

Perkins attempted to use the emergency brake to slow the vehicle down but ended up continuing down Main Street and running through the intersection with Herschel Street before crashing into a guardrail, police said.

Perkins was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation.

Officer Douglas Bell covered the accident and was assisted by Officer Ricky Pelletier and members of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance.
