PORTLAND, Maine — A man was rescued on Thursday night from Portland Harbor near the Custom House Wharf, according to a Portland Fire Department statement.

Another man had approached personnel from the department’s Marine Division saying that a man had fallen in the water around 9:30 p.m., the statement read.

Deputy Chief Robert Thompson arrived to find the man floundering behind a boat in the water, stating he “couldn’t do it anymore,” according to the statement.

An ambulance arrived shortly after and the man, whose name was not disclosed, was able to get a secure grip on the pilings of the wharf after being coached by paramedics to the pilings.

Firefighters were then able to extricate the man from the water, pulling him into a fireboat to safety. He was transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

The man’s condition was not known Friday.
