BUCKSPORT, Maine — Bangor state legislator Adam Goode captured first place in the 40th Annual Tour du Lac 10-mile road race with a time of 54 minutes, 49 seconds Saturday.
Goode turned in a pace of 5:29 per mile to outdistance Matt Homich of Ellsworth, who finished second in 55:21.
He was followed by Erik McCarthy of Old Town (56:17), Ken Akiha of Orono (56:39) and Ian Fraser of Brewer (59:55).
Mary Clapper Buck of Mechanicville, New York, was the first women’s finisher with a 1:13:43 clocking. She was followed by Jasmine Fowler of Morrill (1:14:23), Heather Knowles of Brewer (1:14:53), Katherine Collins of Winterport (1:15:59) and Robin Clarke of Ellsworth (1:17:09).
A total of 86 runners finished the race, which featured several uphill stretches as well as equally challenging downhills with a loop around scenic Silver Lake.
The race started as a 10-mile cycling event in 1976 by Anne Norton who was teaching French at Bucksport High in ’76. Many of her students were interested in the historic Tour du France cycling race.
Two cycling races were held, but Norton and her husband, Steve, changed it to a road race in ’78 to meet the demands of the running boom that was then taking place.
