NASHVILLE PLANTATION, Maine — A two-vehicle accident sent one man to the hospital and closed down Route 11 between Portage and Ashland for a short time Tuesday afternoon, according to the Maine State Police.

Emergency personnel extracted James Gaughan, 60, of Baldwin from his car after he became trapped inside because of the accident, Sgt. Chad Fuller of the state police said Wednesday morning.

According to Fuller, Gaughan was traveling north on Route 11 in a 2014 Toyota Sienna van about 2:15 p.m., when a 2012 Ford pickup truck driven by Troy Theriault, 32, of Fort Kent pulled out in front of him from a logging road.

Fuller said Theriault claimed he had not seen Gaughan’s van, and it hit Theriault’s truck broadside.

After being freed from his vehicle, Gaughan was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center for injuries not considered life-threatening, Fuller said.

Trooper Adam Stoutamyer was assisted at the scene by members of the Ashland police and fire departments and the Aroostook Sheriff’s Office.

The accident remains under investigation, Fuller said.
