WINSLOW, Maine — Organizers of the Ms. 4th of July pageant say a math error led to the wrong teen being crowned winner. Staff says 14-year-old Caitlin Grenier won the contest last weekend, but judges mistakenly gave the crown to 17-year-old Molly Lybrook after a ballot miscount.
When the problem was discovered organizers asked the two girls to share the title, but say, Lybrook refused, and even started a petition online to let her keep it. On the petition, Lybrook has 400 signatures of support, but also several nasty comments. Organizers say the negativity eventually led to Lybrook giving up the crown.
“With all the negativity out there she was kind of embarrassed, I feel bad. I never wanted it to be like that. She decided she’d let Caitlin wear the crown and graciously step down,” said Leah Frost, pageant director.
CBS13 reached out to both girls involved, one never replied; the other declined commenting.
Organizers say they’ll triple check scores next year to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
