BANGOR, Maine — The Chesterville teen who was involved in a swimming accident Thursday afternoon on Great Pond in Rome has died, according to reports from several Maine media outlets.
The teen’s name was not released by authorities Friday but he is said to be a 16-year-old Mount Blue High School student.
The Maine Warden Service is investigating the apparent drowning. Messages left for wardens handling the investigation were not returned Friday afternoon or evening.
The boy was swimming with two other teens near Crooked Island and went below the surface, Cpl. John MacDonald said Thursday in a news release.
After he was recovered by his friends, a nearby off-duty nurse was alerted to the incident and performed CPR. The boy was brought by Delta Ambulance to Maine General Hospital in Augusta, MacDonald said.
The three boys had been boating and moored near Crooked Island. All three attempted to swim from the moored boat back to Crooked Island when the incident took place.
One of the teens was wearing a life jacket.
