Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek is attempting to be the fastest person to ever complete the Appalachian Trail. He’s running — yes, running — the more than 2,189 miles up the eastern seaboard, over mountains in 14 states. And he’s now in Maine.

The record of 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes is held by Jennifer Pharr Davis. Jurek, 41, will need to summit Mt. Katahdin by 5:15 p.m., Sunday, July 12, to break it, according to Runner’s World, which is tracking his journey. With less than 230 miles to go, that’s an average of about 45 miles per day.

Did we mention he’s running up mountains?

He reached Maine on Sunday. And as of Tuesday afternoon, when he passed Sabbath Pond in Franklin County, he was 89.5 percent complete with his run. He’ll soon enter the 100-mile Wilderness — the most remote section of the AT.
