BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Water District is warning customers of a scam after bogus telephone calls attempting to collect payments were made recently.

According to a company statement, the caller would tell a customer they have missed a payment or the payment can’t be processed.

The customer is then asked to purchase a prepaid debit card and call with card information, but the water district does not contact customers whose accounts are in good standings.

Customers who receive such phone calls should verify their account by contacting 947-4516, and note that information on water bill payments is on the back of a bill.
