HERMON, Maine — Key Club members joined forces on May 28 to bring children teenagers, and a few adults together with some old school fun.
Key Club Lt. Gov. Matt Nichols prepared and hosted a Water War on the Hermon High School field hockey field, charging an admission fee of $10 for unlimited water balloons, snacks and pizza.
When the gates opened at 3:15 p.m., participants already were lined up awaiting the event.
Key Club members from around Maine joined in and helped the host school fill balloons with water.
The event, which raised funds for the Kiwanis Eliminate Project, was deemed a success. The president of the Hermon Key Club, Kate Lusignan, said that it raised approximately $400.
The Eliminate Project is a global campaign to end maternal-neonatal tetanus, a disease that often targets children in poor areas around the world. The international assignment has raised more than $100 million dollars toward this leading preventable cause of mental retardation, organizers of the event said.
Nichols said that he hopes this is not the last time the school hosts a Water War, and anticipates its annual return. Some changes he hopes to make? “We need way more water
balloons next year,” he said, after the three-thousand balloons filled for the event were handed out to eager Water War participants.
