MADISON, Maine — A medical condition may have been a factor in an accident that sent a Skowhegan woman to the hospital Monday afternoon, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Heather Johnston, 31, was traveling south on Route 201 when her vehicle apparently swerved into the northbound lane, struck a mailbox, skidded across the road and came to rest in a ditch on the southbound side of the road, Chief Deputy James Ross said.

The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. and Johnston was the lone occupant of the vehicle, Ross said. No other vehicles were struck.

Johnston suffered a head injury and was transported to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan, Ross said.

Skowhegan and Madison firefighters assisted sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
