EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — A Medway man has been charged with escaping from police custody, a jail official said Wednesday.

Lucas McGowan, 23, also was charged with violation of conditions of release.

McGowan was the subject of a manhunt involving Maine Game Wardens, state police and officers from the Millinocket and East Millinocket police departments that began sometime shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, several residents said. He was captured in the Elm Street neighborhood about two hours later.

Police Chief Cameron McDunnah did not return telephone messages Tuesday and Wednesday.

Residents said police told them McGowan may have escaped from East Millinocket police custody.

McGowan’s bail was set at $1,500 cash following an appearance at the Penobscot County Judicial Center on Wednesday, a spokesman at the Penobscot County Jail said. McGowan remained at the jail Wednesday evening. It was immediately determined what charge he faced related to the conditions of release he was accused of violating.
