MANCHESTER, HARTFORD, TOLLAND, CT AND FORT KENT – Emily (Madore) Long Brown, 108, of Manchester, died July 15, 2015. Born on January 5, 1907, in Fort Kent, ME., she was the oldest of Pierre Maddox and Agnes Beland Madore’s eight children. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her 7 siblings; husband Joseph Long and husband Edgar Brown.
Mrs. Brown grew up on her family’s farm in northern Maine and was a lifelong dressmaker. She owned her own dress shop in Fort Kent for many years and, later in her career, worked at the Gloria Gay Dress Shop in Hartford, Conn. She and husband Joseph Long lived in Claire, Canada; Great Barrington, Mass.; and Hartford, Conn. After Long’s death, Mrs. Brown settled back in Hartford, where she married Edgar Brown in 1972. Mr. and Mrs. Brown split their time between their homes in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Tolland, Conn., until his death. She spent the last three decades of her life in Manchester, Conn., where she was a beloved presence in the lives of her nephews Frank W. Soucy and J. Gilbert Soucie, and their families. Her family celebrates the long, vibrant life of their loving aunt. She will be remembered for her unwavering independent spirit, unfading witty sense of humor, and fascinating stories of a life that spanned more than a century. Mrs. Brown leaves countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews, including her caretaker in later years, Frank W. Soucy of East Hartford.
Friends may call on Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester, Conn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday 10:30 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church 80 Main Street in Manchester, Conn. (Guests are asked to go directly to the church). Internment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Hartford. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bridget Church.
