PARSONSFIELD, Maine — Golfers who hit the greens early Saturday at the Province Lake Golf Club got to see something unusual, when a plane landed on the course near the second hole.

Pilot Gary Soucy, 66, of Brewer ran into “torrential rain and fog, making visibility dangerous to fly, and decided to make the emergency landing” shortly after taking off from the Waterville Airport, Sheriff Bill King posted on his Facebook page.

Soucy was able to make the emergency landing with his 1965 Piper Cherokee 140 on the 18-hole golf course at about 7:50 a.m. without damaging the plane or himself, King said.

Deputy Darren Cyr arrived at the scene and was working in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration, which investigates all domestic emergency landings and crashes.

Soucy was en route to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to participate in a plane enthusiast event and was alone in the aircraft when he encountered bad weather.

“The FAA was notified and will inspect the aircraft before it can be removed from the golf course,” King said. “The plane was pushed to the side, and the golf course will remain open.”
