WELLS, Maine — Two motorists were taken to the hospital Monday for injuries they suffered in a collision on Route 1 near the Kennebunk town line, Wells police said in a news release.

The crash happened about 8:45 a.m., when a northbound 2007 Saab driven by Tyler Sullivan, 21, of Salem, New Hampshire, reportedly attempted to pass another vehicle but instead struck a southbound 2015 Volkswagen driven by Deborah James, 62 of Freeport, police said.

After colliding with the Volkswagen, Sullivan’s Saab continued across the southbound travel lane and struck several trees. James had to be extricated from her vehicle by rescue personnel, police said.

According to police, witnesses said the Saab had been traveling at a high rate of speed.

Route 1 was shut down for several hours while police investigated the crash.

Sullivan was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he is listed in stable condition. James was taken to York Hospital in York, where she was treated and then released.

The Maine Warden Service provided a certified accident reconstructionist to assist in the investigation.
