BELFAST, Maine — An elderly man was found safe early Wednesday morning after getting lost in the woods behind his home Tuesday night, officials said.

Ulmer Russ, 89, was cold but in otherwise good health, according to Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.

MacDonald said Russ had gone for an ATV ride behind his home around 6:30 Tuesday night but did not return.

Family searched behind the residence but could not find him and subsequently called 911. Maine Warden Service canines, the Maine Association of Search and Rescue Dogs, Belfast firefighters and Waldo County Sheriff’s Deputies responded.

MASARD member and retired game warden Deborah Palmen and her canine found Russ safely at approximately 3:50 Wednesday morning. MacDonald said he had become lost after leaving his ATV to inspect a recent logging operation.

He was transported to Waldo County General Hospital for evaluation.
