OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Old Orchard Beach could be the next Maine town to restrict where registered sex offenders can and cannot live.
The Old Orchard Beach Town Council is considering an ordinance that would place a 750-foot radius around “restricted properties,” which includes public and private schools, parks and athletic fields.
“I just think it’s important for people to know this town takes this very seriously,” said Deputy Police Chief Keith Babin Tuesday.
Old Orchard Police Police Chief Dana Kelley drafted the ordinance after a resident asked him if the town had these restrictions in place.
“We don’t mind giving someone a second chance but these second chances come with restrictions,” Babin said. “Just like when they committed these crimes and were convicted, they have to register for the rest of their lives… this is just another restriction they have to do if they want to reside in this town.”
Out of the 14 sex offenders registered and living in Old Orchard Beach, the ordinance would only apply to those who committed a crime against a child. If they already live in a restricted zone they would be allowed to stay. The ordinance would affect people moving into town.
Another area that would be redistricted is the prime real estate along Old Orchard Beach’s Sandy Beach. According to Babin, registered sex offenders would not be allowed to live in a seasonal rental during the winter months in the homes within 750 feet of the beach.
A brief public hearing was held Tuesday, the town council could vote on the ordinance as early as next month.
