BANGOR, Maine – Righthander Tommy Farrar scattered seven hits over seven-plus innings Wednesday night as No. 4 R.H, Foster of Hampden defeated No. 5 Trenton 11-5 in the play-in round of the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament at Husson University.
Michael Turner paced the winners’ 13-hit offense with a two-run inside-the-park home run, two doubles, a single, four runs scored and three RBIs.
R.H. Foster (13-6) will play top-seeded Post 51 of Oakland at 7 p.m. Thursday during the first round of the four-team, double-elimination phase of the tournament.
Trenton ended its season with an 11-8 record.
Farrar struck out one batter and walked three before giving way to Tyler Beaton, who retired six of the seven batters he faced.
R.H. Foster broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Nick Guerrette hit a leadoff single and Beaton walked before Turner greeted Trenton reliever Gage Feeney with a first-pitch RBI double to deep right field.
Beaton scored on a wild pitch before Turner scored the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Connor Farmer.
Trenton answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but R.H. Foster built its lead to 9-4 with another three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh fueled by Farmer’s RBI double, a run-scoring single by Zach Nash and three Trenton errors.
Turner added his inside-the-park homer, a shot to the right-center field gap, in the bottom of the eighth.
Farmer finished with two hits and three RBIs for R.H. Foster, while Guerrette and Nash also had two hits apiece for the winners.
Joe Archambault tripled and singled for Trenton, while Feeney doubled and singled with two RBIs.
