Bangor Band concert

BANGOR — Bangor Band fans are invited to another summer concert by the band at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Bangor Waterfront . This concert is co-sponsored by Groth and Associates of Bangor.  The Bangor Band is conducted by Curvin Farnham.

The band will perform in its “blue clamphitheatre” concert shell for this concert and other Waterfront concerts this summer.

Concert goers should bring chairs or blankets for seating.

Admission to the concert is free, although donations will be appreciated. For information, go to bangorband.org.

Smart Driver courses

BANGOR —  The Eastern Area Agency on Aging will present AARP Smart Driver courses at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Aug. 5, Friday, Sept. 11 and Friday, Oct. 9. Students are asked to arrive early to get seated comfortably.

The cost of the class is $15 AARP members, $20 others.

Brewer Hometown Band

BREWER — The Brewer Hometown Band will perform a concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday July  30, at the Brewer Auditorium. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated.  For information, call 989-5199.

BREWER — St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, North Main at Holyoke Street, will host a Worship on the Water front service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug.2, at Brewer Children’s Garden on the Brewer Waterfront. The event is open to all.

Parking will be at former B & L Auto Parts, next to Save-A-Lot.

Bring a potluck picnic and a chair. In case of rain, the service will be held at the church.

Wabanaki history talk

CASTINE — A presentation on Wabanaki history and storytelling will be given by John Bear Mitchell at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Wilson Museum’s Hutchins Education Center, 112 Perkins St. John Bear Mitchell is a member of the Penobscot Nation. He serves as the associate director of the Wabanaki Center at the University of Maine and University of Maine Native Program waiver coordinator. He also teaches courses at the university. In the past he was the Native Studies teacher at the Indian Island School and also has served as a Maine Touring Artist delivering an Arts in Education program. While in college, he toured with the Native American Storytellers of New England. His singing and storytelling have been featured in many videos and documentaries, and he was also an adviser and participant in the PBS series “Colonial House.”

Star Shows

ORONO — The Jordan Planetarium is finishing up the summer with four new programs for visitors of all ages and interests. Public shows take place at 2 p.m. Sundays, 7 p.m. Fridays, and 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, through August.

Explore the deepest depths of the ocean, the icy crust of Jupiter’s moons, the rusty red sands of Mars, and even the age of the dinosaurs, all to find out how life adapts and survives in “Origins of Life” at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 14, 21 and 28.

“Trip Through Space” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, will feature a little bit of everything. See the constellations of the night time sky, visit the planets of the solar system, explore the powerful processes that make the stars shine, and fly past nebulas and black holes.

On Tuesdays

The planetarium will take visitors on a journey along the electromagnetic spectrum at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25.  “Cosmic Colors” explores the world of light, the fastest thing in the universe. From planets to the northern lights and blooming garden flowers, visitors will discover what makes a rainbow so breathtaking or how invisible light reveals the universe.

Planetarium visitors will go to the darkest depths of space to encounter some of the most destructive forces in the universe at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 13, 20, and 27, in “Black Holes.” Massive stars end their lives in enormous explosions and leave behind reality bending regions of extreme gravity.
