NEWPORT, Maine — A residence on Grove Street was leveled by fire early Sunday morning, according to officials.

The two residents awoke around 4:15 a.m. to a smoke alarm going off and their dog barking, and quickly managed to escape the burning home, Newport Assistant Fire Chief Ricky Turner said.

Heavy smoke was billowing out of the double-wide, single-story home when firefighters arrived, with flames showing in a front bedroom, Turner said.

The assistant chief said the family’s dog and one cat also escaped, but one cat perished.

Firefighters from Corinna, Newport and Pittsfield managed to get the blaze under control in about a half-hour, Turner said. A cause has not been determined, but foul play is not suspected.

The fire marshal’s office is conducting an investigation. Turner said the home was insured.
