While the identity of the beach-going cartographer responsible has not been made public, Ogunquit police came upon a remarkably detailed map of the United States carved into the town’s oceanfront sands recently.
Three photos of the masterpiece were uploaded to the Ogunquit Police Department Facebook page Monday night.
“Someone did some hard work today on the beach using the sand to make a very large U.S. map,” the police posted. “Very detailed and well done.”
By early Tuesday afternoon, the picture post had been shared 271 times and liked more than 1,200 times.
The mapping effort is apparently an annual one — a Facebook commenter told the police the map maker “does the entire thing by hand and by memory” and did so there last summer as well. Since the police photos were first posted Monday night, the images have been reposted by WCSH 6 television and the Portland radio station WJBQ 97.9 FM.
