CARIBOU AND SCARBOROUGH – It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Vanier
of Caribou/Scarborough Wednesday, July 22, 2015 after a long period of declining health and a
fierce, hard fought battle against colon cancer.
Peter was born in Presque Isle, Maine, June 13th, 1962, the youngest child (by 13 minutes) of John and Theresa Vanier. He was educated in the Caribou school system and attended NMVTI. For most of his adult life, he worked in the Aroostook Mental Health Center’s I.T.
department. While there, he received the Vicker’s Award, an honor he was extremely proud of.
Peter was always happiest when he was surrounded by the company of his good friends and family – he loved them all deeply. His connection to nature remained strong to the end. He loved to hunt and fish, and always felt at peace whenever he was in the woods or on the water.
Peter is survived by his father, John Vanier of Caribou, his son Tony of Boston, Massachusetts, his sister Jane and her husband Bill Egeler of Presque Isle and his brotherMichael and his wife Nancy of Portland. He is also survived by his twin sister and primary care giver Ann of Scarborough. Peter’s strong will to live was matched only by Annie’s never ending resolve to keep him alive and comfortable for as long as possible. He also leaves 2 special nieces: Teressa (Tera) and her husband Bennett Meulendyk of Dublin, California, and Erica of Portland, as well as several aunts, cousins, an uncle and many special and dear friends. We will
all miss him greatly – his keen intellect, sharp wit and sense of humor brightened our lives, but we take comfort in knowing that he is now free from pain and finally at peace. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Theresa in 1997.
Our family would like to acknowledge and thank the many healthcare workers who cared for and showed Peter and all of us such compassion and skill. Special thanks to: Dr. Ketchum and her team; all at Mercy Hospital and clinics; VNA Home Health and New England Life Care. We are forever grateful.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to “Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation – Maine Hunt”, 6297 Buffalo Road, Harborcreek, PA 16421 a cause Peter supported and believed strongly in.
A committal service will be held at a later date. To share condolences with the family, please go to www.athutchins.com
