Patriots sign cornerback Brown
The New England Patriots have signed veteran cornerback Tarell Brown.
Brown, 30, is an eight-year veteran who spent last season with the Oakland Raiders after playing his first seven seasons for Bay-area rival San Francisco.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder has played in 114 career games, recording 295 tackles, 11 interceptions, 59 passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. He started all 14 games he played in for the Raiders, finishing with 55 tackles and four passes defensed.
Brown will compete for a roster spot in a Patriots secondary that has undergone significant turnover with the departures of cornerbacks Darrelle Revis, Kyle Arrington and Alfonzo Dennard. Logan Ryan and Justin Green are penciled in as the starters entering training camp, with Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler and former Philadelphia Eagle Bradley Fletcher among those competing for playing time along with Robert McClain, Derek Cox, Dax Swanson, Jimmy Jean, Darryl Roberts and Brandon King.
Three Yankees minor leaguers hit with 72-game suspensions
Three players on the New York Yankees’ Dominican Summer League team were suspended Wednesday by Major League Baseball for 72 games after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
Pitchers Anderson Acevedo, Anthoniris Santana and Carlos Santana each tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid.
Earlier in the year, two other players in the Yankees’ organization were suspended for PEDs. Pitcher Brayan Alcantara tested positive for Stanozolol and Moises Cedeno for Celnbuterol.
On Tuesday, New York Mets pitcher Jenrry Meija received a 162-game suspension for a second positive test for performance-enhancing drugs.
Bears top pick White opens camp on PUP list
Chicago Bears first-round pick Kevin White will be sidelined by a shin injury to open training camp.
The Bears kick off workouts in Bourbonnais, Ill., Thursday.
General manager Ryan Pace said White, the eighth overall pick in the 2015 draft, was hurt in the final days of organized team activities and was told to stay off of his feet for most of the past month. White wasn’t a regular participant in OTA workouts, while Alshon Jeffery and free-agent addition Eddie Royal worked with the first-team offense.
Head coach John Fox said White and quarterback David Fales (illness) would be on the physically unable to perform list and not on the practice field this week.
No timetable for White’s return to the field was discussed.
Mariners’ Cano undergoes MRI on abdomen
Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was out of the lineup Wednesday as he underwent an MRI for an abdominal issue, manager Lloyd McClendon said.
“He was trying to make a play a couple of days ago and he felt it,” McClendon said before the Mariners played the Arizona Diamondbacks. “It’s got a little worse; so, as a precaution, we will take an MRI today and wait on the doctors’ results and go from there. Right now he is day-to-day.”
Earlier this month, Cano told USA Today that he has been dealing with extreme acid reflux since last fall, when he took antibiotics to kill a parasite that had caused stomach discomfort since August.
Raptors hire Stackhouse, two other assistants
Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey added Jerry Stackhouse, Rex Kalamian and Andy Greer to his coaching staff on Wednesday.
Stackhouse, 40, played in the NBA for 18 years and is coaching for the first time in the NBA. He last played with the Brooklyn Nets in 2012-13. He had been working as a broadcast analyst in Detroit.
Kalamian spent the past six seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Greer spent the past five seasons with the Chicago Bulls.
