Have a hankering for sausage?

At 53,000 pounds and 65 feet in length, the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill is the largest touring grill in the world, capable of cooking up 2,500 of the company’s signature bratwursts every hour.

How many of those can any one Mainer consume? We may be about to find out.

On Saturday and Sunday, the massive grill will be at the Wagon Wheel Campgrounds in Old Orchard Beach, selling brats for $3 apiece to raise money for the Old Orchard Beach Fire Department. On Saturday, from 4-6 p.m., the traveling tractor trailer-sized grill will play host to a brat eating contest.

The Big Taste Grill will be open at the campground from 2-9 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday

The location and beneficiary of the charitable grill visit are appropriate. Just more than a year ago, in May 2014, the campground and campers there were among the properties most severely damaged when a sparking freight train rolled through the area and caused a series of brush fires across several towns.

The Big Taste Grill came to Old Orchard Beach last summer as well.

The Wisconsin-based Johnsonville Foods claimed in a news release the touring grill has raised nearly $4 million for charities nationwide. In 2014, the Johnsonville Big Taste Grill raised more than $136,000 and served more than 100,000 brats, the company said. Officially launched in 1995 to celebrate Johnsonville’s 50th anniversary, this year’s tour also marks the company’s 70th birthday.
