BANGOR — Effective as of Monday, Aug. 3, the offices of United Way of Eastern Maine will no longer be located at Springer Drive in Bangor. The agency’s new address is 700 Main St., Suite 1, Bangor.

Smart Driver courses

BANGOR —  The Eastern Area Agency on Aging will present AARP Smart Driver courses at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 and Friday, Oct. 9. Students are asked to arrive early to get seated comfortably.

The cost of the class is $15 AARP members, $20 others.

Winning brew unveiling

BANGOR — Join the Bangor Historical Society, Geaghan Bros. Brewing Company, Central Street Farmhouse and winning home brewer Jerry Robichaud for the History on Tap Unveiling Event, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Geaghan Bros. Brewery facility in Brewer.

History on Tap launched earlier this year with a contest asking brewers to submit sample brews based on historic recipes and-or including ingredients that are historic in nature. Brewers in the region answered the call and Robichaud’s Kentucky Common came out on top.

As the contest winner, Robichaud’s recipe will be brewed for a Limited Edition Release by Geaghan Bros. and will be the subject of the September event.

“The evening starts with a social hour, then we move into a Tap Talk session with Jerry and representatives from Geaghan’s about the creation of the recipe and the steps to get it from a small home batch to something that is available commercially,” said Bangor Historical Society Executive Director Melissa Gerety. “We’ll also include a brief talk about Bangor’s history with beer, alcohol and prohibition.”

Tickets for the event are limited. The cost is $35, $30 Bangor Historical Society members, and includes a light meal, a sample of the winning brew, a selection of other Geaghan Bros. brews and the program.

BANGOR — Carole Harrison of Bangor, a member of the Ellsworth Memorial Auxiliary 109 attended the 102nd National Convention of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign War July 18-22 in Pittsburgh, It marked the beginning of her two-year term in the VFW National Council of administration.

Golf Tournament

BANGOR — St. Joseph Healthcare will hold its 26th annual Frank C. Chapman Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit St. Joseph Healthcare at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course. Last year the event raised more than $50,000.

The four-person team scramble will begin will include the a Maine lobster bake.

If a participant gets a hole-in-one, he or she will drive home in a 2015 Camry from Down East Toyota.

Awards and prize drawings also will be a part of the event.

195th Army Band Reunion

BREWER — The 195th Maine Army National Guard Band announced that it will host a reunion event on Sept. 13 at the Brewer Performing Arts Center as part of the Brewer Days celebration. All former members of the 195th are invited and encouraged to attend, regardless of length of service.

“This is an opportunity for us to celebrate the history of our unit as well as to share our current mission with those who served before us,” said Chief Warrant Officer Harris, unit commander of the 195th.  “We’re really looking forward to it.”

The day’s activities will include a rehearsal conducted by past and present unit commanders, a public concert at noon, and a barbecue social at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.

Brewer High School reunion

BREWER — The annual Brewer HIgh School Alumni Reunion will be held Friday, Aug. 21, at Jeff’s Catering and Banquet Center. Happy Hour will be held 4-5 p.m.

All former graduates or former students who left school 50 years or more ago are invited to attend. The event will include a social hour, dinner and a meeting.

Entertainment at the reunion will be the Retro Rockerz band playing popular songs of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

Crafting with quills and birch bark

CASTINE — An interactive presentation with quillwork artist Ralph “Porcupine” Bishop on crafting with porcupine quills and birch bark will take place 2-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Wilson Museum’s Hutchins Education Center.

This program will include opportunities for participants to get involved in the creation of quillwork designs.

Bishop has been crafting with porcupine quills and birch bark for 40 years. He dyes the quills to create a variety of colors and then uses them to create intricate designs on birch bark forms. His works of art can be found in three foreign countries and all but three states within the United States. He describes his craft as “putting color and happiness into hearts.”

National banner bearer

HAMPDEN — Cindy Cowling of Bangor, a member of the Whitcomb-Baker VFW Auxiliary 4633 in Hampden attended the 102nd National Convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars held July 18-22 in Pittsburgh. The convention marked the beginning of her 2015-2016 term as national banner bearer.

Benefit bike ride

HERMON — For the 12th consecutive year, Texas Roadhouse restaurants will host a motorcycle ride to benefit Homes for Our Troops. There will be 10 rides nationwide including one in Maine. Organizers expect more than 7,000 riders to participate nationwide, the fundraising goal is $250,000. Over the last 11 years, the event raised $800,000 for Homes for Our Troops and hopes to break the $1 million mark this year.

The registration fee is $30, $50 driver and passenger, and includes breakfast, a barbecue lunch, live musical entertainment and raffles. The first 300 to register receive an event T-shirt. Nonriders may registers for a fee of $20 which includes the barbecue.

Register in advance at HFOTUSA.org/bikerun or in person 8-10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Texas Roadhouse, 36 Whitten Road, Augusta, the starting point of the ride. The ride will end at 12:30 p.m. at Central Maine Harley-Davidson, 2387 Route 2, in Hermon.

Zonta Club fundraiser

HOLDEN — The Zonta Club of Bangor will host a wine and beer tasting and silent auction 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Sarah’s House, Route 1A. Admission is by donation of $25. Board of Education chairwoman

WINTERPORT — The Maine State Board of Education recently elected Martha J. Harris of Winterport  as chairwoman and Alan R. Burton of Winslow as vice-chairman.

Harris is chairwoman of the Legislative Liaison Committee and serves on the School Facilities Construction Committee for the State Board of Education. She is in her 21 year on the RSU 22 School Board where she has served as chairwoman of the policy and building committees and served on the steering committee for transition to student-centered, standards-based education.

In 2013, she received the 2 Those Who Care Award for her volunteer work, especially in the area of education. She has been in the general practice of law in Bangor since 1977.

Alan R. Burton has been employed by Cianbro for the past 38 years and is vice president of Cianbro. Burton was the impetus in founding the Cianbro Institute which houses all of Cianbro’s training, education and workforce development programs and initiatives.

Burton is the founder of the Maine Craft Championships and serves on several industry workforce development boards, trustees and councils. Burton is chairman of the Boards Career and Technical Education Committee, serves as legislative liaison for the State Board of Education, and serves on the School Facilities Construction Committee.
