NEW SHARON, Maine — A Windham man was killed Sunday when his motorcycle left Route 27 and wound up in a field, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Jonathan Billings, 24, was not wearing a helmet, according to Spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Farmington police had attempted to stop BIllings at about 1 a.m. but he took off, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour, McCausland said.
Police did not pursue the bike because of the dangerous speed, McCausland said.
A landowner found Billings’ body near his wrecked motorcycle in his field around 6 p.m. Sunday, about a mile from the Farmington-New Sharon line. McCausland said the impact sent Billings into a fence post.
Sunday’s crash marked the fifth highway death in the state since Friday night, and was the fourth involving a motorcycle. Other fatal crashes were reported in Durham, Fort Kent, Enfield, Buckfield and Southwest Harbor.
