GRAY, Maine — Members of American Legion Post 86 in Gray said the post was broken into Saturday night. Leaders said about $15,000 was stolen from the safe inside the post after someone cut into the safe.

Post leaders say an additional unknown amount of money was stolen from an ATM as well. The register was also broken into.

The American Legion National Commander was at the post for an event on Saturday. Hundreds of legion members were in attendance. The American Legion post in Gray has nearly 800 members and many of them say they are furious.

A detective with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says an investigation is underway. The detective says he’s not sure whether it was one person or multiple people who committed the crime, but whoever it was “knew what they were doing.”

Investigators collected evidence from the post. They say the investigation is still in an early stage.
