YORK, Maine — York police say a 23-year-old Massachusetts woman was struck and killed by a car while walking on Ridge Road early Tuesday morning.

The driver of the car fled the scene.

According to police, when first responders arrived, the woman was unconscious and her boyfriend was tending to her. She was taken to Portsmouth Hospital, where she later died.

Police were able to later locate the vehicle from a witness description. Carolyn Lee, 21, was charged with leaving the scene of a serious personal injury accident, and operating under the influence of alcohol.

Police say the woman and man were walking along the shoulder of Ridge Road when the vehicle struck her, barely missing her boyfriend.

The accident remains under investigation.
