ERIE, Pennsylvania — The Erie SeaWolves scored six times in the fifth inning and never looked back, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs 10-1 Thursday night in Eastern League baseball action at Jerry Uht Park.
Erie completed the series win, taking two of three from Portland.
Portland took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on Aneury Tavarez’s RBI single to plate Jordan Weems.
Erie retaliated with six runs off Justin Haley (4-13) and Simon Mercedes. Wynton Bernard tied the game with an RBI triple and Jason Krizan gave Erie the lead for good with a double.
Jason Robbins, Connor Harrell and Wade Gaynor had RBI singles in the frame. The Sea Wolves sent 11 men to the plate.
In the eighth, Erie added the icing on the cake when Robbins hit a three-run homer to right field off John Cornely.
Haley took the loss for Portland, giving up four runs on seven hits over 4 ⅓ innings. Austin Kubitza earned his seventh win of the season for Erie. The righty gave up an unearned run over six innings on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
Perth, Australia native Warwick Saupold pitched the final three innings to notch his first save of the season. Saupold fanned five and became Erie’s all time leader in strikeouts.
Portland third baseman Dustin Lawley went 2-for-4, picking up his first multi-hit game with the Sea Dogs. Sam Travis finished 1-for-2, extending his hitting streak to 13 straight games.
