ISLESBORO, Maine — Firefighters from the mainland town of Lincolnville took a water shuttle Monday afternoon in order to help Islesboro firefighters battle a blaze in the parsonage of the Second Baptist Church.

Island firefighters got the call about the structure fire at about 4:45 p.m., according to Mary Hauprich, the public information officer for the Islesboro Volunteer Fire Department.

“It’s always challenging out here because we don’t have enough personnel,” she said. “We have to work smart. We have to utilize who we have, and for structure fires we get mutual aid on the way.”

By the time the mainlanders got to the scene, the island firefighters largely had the attic fire under control. Hauprich said it appeared to be a bathroom vent that started smoldering that caused the attic to catch fire. Although people were inside the house when the fire started, they escaped without injury, she said.

Eight or ten members of the Lincolnville Volunteer Fire Department came to the assistance of the island crew, which numbers less than a dozen, she said.
