OWLS HEAD, Maine — The town’s sole representative on the Rockland-area school board has resigned.

Sally Carleton submitted her resignation last week, citing personal reasons. Her term was to run through August 2017.

Owls Head’s annual town meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24. Owls Head elects its municipal officials from nominations made at the floor of town meetings. The town meeting warrant was expected to be made final Monday night, giving the selectmen time to place a vote for that position on the town meeting warrant.

“As a board member for many years, I have very much appreciated having the honor and responsibility of representing Owl’s Head residents. I wish to thank residents, fellow board members and school administrators for all their efforts and support in striving to make the school system one of excellence. It is my hope that my successor will bring a strong commitment toward that same goal,” Carleton said in her resignation letter to the Regional School Unit 13 Board.

Carleton has served on the RSU 13 board since its creation in 2009. She also had served on the predecessor School Administrative District 5 Board from 1999 through 2004. A retired educator, she served as principal of the Owls Head Central School after leaving the board in 2004 and before returning to serve on the RSU 13 Board.

RSU 13 Board Chairman Steve Roberts praised Carleton’s service.

“She gave a lifetime of service to education. She exemplified a life commitment to community, education and the kids,” he said.
