Alex Kretzschmar, who was at St. Ambrose (Iowa) University the past two years, was named assistant coach for the Colby College football team on Monday.

Kretzschmar will work with the quarterbacks for Colby head coach Jonathan Michaeles at the Waterville-based school.

Kretzschmar was the wide receivers coach for the varsity, worked with special teams and was the head coach of the junior varsity team (in 2014) in his two years at St. Ambrose. While coaching at the Davenport, Iowa, school, Kretzschmar earned his master’s degree in organizational leadership.

“Alex comes to Colby with an array of coaching experience at the Division III and NAIA levels,” Michaeles said in a news release. “He has a solid background coaching offensive skills and comes highly recommended as a coach, a person and recruiter. He is a welcome addition to the staff.”

Kretzschmar also was an assistant coach in charge of wide receivers at North Park University in 2012. His other coaching experience was in 2010 as a student coach at St. Norbert (Wisconsin) College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

A three-year letterwinner at St. Norbert, Kretzschmar played wide receiver. He earned a coaches award during his final season.

Saint Joe’s player joins independent league team

The Joplin Blasters of the American Association purchased the contract of former Saint Joseph’s College catcher Joe Coyne of Duxbury, Massachusetts, last week.

Coyne, a four-time first team All-Conference honoree and 2015 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year at the Standish college, began the summer playing for the Old Orchard Beach Surge, an independent team that plays in the newly-formed North Country Baseball League.

In 32 games with the Surge, Coyne hit .365 with 22 runs, 10 doubles, two home runs and 26 RBIs.

The American Association is an independent baseball league comprised of teams from the now-defunct Northern and Central Leagues.

In three games with the Blasters, Coyne is hitting .273 (3-11) with three runs and an RBI.
