BANGOR, Maine — Trevor DeLaite, who led Coffee News of Bangor to its second consecutive American Legion baseball state championship this summer, has been named the Zone 1 player of the year in a vote of participating coaches.
The lefthander, honored as the zone’s pitcher of the year in 2014, compiled a 4-0 regular-season record with a 1.13 earned run average, 56 strikeouts and just four walks in 40 innings pitched this summer.
DeLaite, who will be a senior at Bangor High School in the fall, also batted .455 with a home run, eight doubles, four triples and 17 RBIs along with 36 runs scored and eight stolen bases to help Coffee News finish second in both the Zone 1 regular-season standings and postseason tournament before going on to win the state title and advance to the American Legion Northeast Regional in Bristol, Connecticut.
The Comrades finished the summer with a 20-10 record under coach Dave Morris.
Zone 1 regular-season and tournament champion Post 51 of Oakland led all clubs with six first-team honorees, led by pitcher of the year Ben Frazee.
Frazee compiled a 5-1 record with a 1.98 earned run average in 50 innings on the mound for Post 51, which concluded the summer with a fourth-place finish at the state Legion tournament.
Also earning first-team recognition for the first-year Zone 1 entry that drew from Messalonskee of Oakland, Lawrence of Fairfield, Waterville and Winslow high schools were second baseman Jake Dexter (.324 BA, 14 RBI, 9 SB), third baseman Danny Pooler (.397 BA, 16 RBI, 12 SB), outfielders Zach Mathieu (.370 BA, 3 HR, 16 RBI) and Devin Warren (.313 BA, 9 RBI, 14 SB) and designated hitter Joe LeClair (.328 BA, 11 RBI, 6 SB).
Rusty Mercier, who guided Post 51 to a 14-4 regular-season record and a 20-8 overall mark, was named the Zone 1 coach of the year.
Three other Coffee News-Bangor players joined DeLaite on the Zone 1 first team: catcher Sam Huston (.345 BA, 3 HR, 13 2B, 22 RBI, 9 SB), pitcher Peter Kemble (4-1, 2.05 ERA, 48K) and utility player Andrew Hillier (2-0, 1.46 ERA, 422 BA, 20 RBI, 8 SB).
Huston subsequently was named most valuable player of the state Legion tournament.
Other first-team honorees were first baseman Matt Pushard (.492 BA, 3 HR, 21 RBI) and shortstop Logan Rogerson (.392 BA, 11 RBI, 8 SB) of Brewer; pitcher Tom Burns (3-1, 2.23 ERA) and outfielder Cody Collins (.373 BA, 10 RBI) of Motor City; pitcher Conor Maguire (26K, 1.04 ERA) of Trenton; and outfielder Michael Turner (.403 BA, 1 HR, 19 RBI, 12 SB) of R.H. Foster-Hampden.
Second-team choices were shortstop Kyle Stevenson and outfielder Ben Crichton of Coffee News-Bangor); pitcher Alex Brooks and outfielder Dylan Soper of Brewer; pitcher Nick Guerrette and third baseman Jackson Gilmore of R.H. Foster-Hampden; catcher Brooks Law of Penquis; second baseman Aubrey Pennington of Midcoast-Rockland; designated hitter D.J. Allen of the RTD 39ers of Madison; outfielder Dylan Hapworth of Post 51; and pitcher Tom Paola, first baseman Jake Keenan and utility player Joe Archambault, all of Trenton.
