LINCOLNVILLE, Maine – An elderly married couple died Saturday night after a fire engulfed their Lincolnville home, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday afternoon.

The 2 Virginia Drive home, located just off Route 1, was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived around 10:40 p.m. Saturday, according to Lincolnville Fire Chief Benjamin Hazen.

Fire and medical crews rescued the couple — Virginia Dyer, 79, and Eugene Dyer, 81 — from inside the home but were unsuccessful in their efforts to resuscitate them, McCausland said.

According to McCausland, the fire appeared to have started in a storage area between the home and the garage. The fire spread to the second story at which point it became fully involved.

Two dogs were rescued from the blaze.

A team of investigators from the state fire marshal’s office were on the scene Saturday night trying to determine the cause of the fire and it remains under investigation, McCausland said.

The state medical examiner’s office will examine the Dyers on Monday, McCausland said.
