BATH, Maine — The Department of Defense last week awarded Bath Iron Works a $13.1 million modification to an existing contract to provide planning yard services for the entire Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship program.

The award follows an $11.3 million modification announced in May.

Under the original contract, scheduled to end in September, the Bath shipyard supported maintenance sustainment for LCS 2 and LCS 4 variant ships, BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser said in May.

Beginning in September, the shipyard will provide planning yard services for the entire LCS program.

The modification awarded Friday means BIW will be the single shipyard to provide engineering, planning, ship configuration, material and logistics support, according to a release from the Department of Defense.

If all options on the contract are exercised by the Navy, the contract could be worth more than $100 million, the Department of Defense said last August.

The Littoral Combat Ship is a fast, agile, focused-mission vessel designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation, according to BIW. It is designed to defeat threats, such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface ships.
