ROCKLAND, Maine — A Rockport man, who was indicted earlier this month for manslaughter in connection to a fatal hit-and-run crash, is back behind bars after police said he tested positive for marijuana use.
Judge Patricia Worth ordered Jeremy Stone, 41, held without bail Wednesday afternoon pending a hearing on a motion filed by the district attorney’s office to revoke his bail on the manslaughter charge.
Judge Worth made her decision after Stone was brought into Knox County Unified Court for a hearing Wednesday on a new charge of violating a condition of release.
According to an affidavit filed by the Rockport Police Department, officers responded after a report of an assault at a residence Tuesday. While there, a Rockport officer spotted Stone. Stone was not connected to the assault investigation, but because one of Stone’s bail conditions required he agree to testing at the request of law enforcement, the officer tested him.
Stone supplied a urine sample that tested positive for marijuana, according to the affidavit. Stone denied using marijuana but was arrested.
Stone was indicted two weeks ago on charges of manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident involving death and possessing improper plates.
Police said Stone was driving drunk on the evening of Jan. 30, when his Jeep Cherokee struck Daniel Cormier, 35, as he walked along Camden Street in Rockland near Pizza Hut with two friends. Cormier was declared dead upon arrival at the local hospital. The friends were not injured. Stone left without stopping, according to police.
He was arrested shortly after the crash for felony operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
Stone was released on bail Aug. 10 before his arrest Tuesday. Bail conditions prohibited him from using alcohol or illegal drugs.
